Tom McIntyre and Thunder Without Rain

Dave Petzal

Ironically, Tom came up with a collection of marginal information that could not be included in the main text, possibly because it was too tangential even for him. It’s included as Endnotes, takes up nearly a third of the book, is a disconnected hodgepodge, and is absolutely fascinating. I would buy Thunder for it alone.

One final item. Tom departed this earth last November. His book reached the shelves at the end of June. Nowhere in it is there any mention of his death. Usually, such information is included on the dust jacket bio. It is not. According to Skyhorse Publishing, he and his wife are living in northern Wyoming. Perhaps a detail such as the author’s death escaped the publisher’s notice. Or perhaps the cost of scrapping the existing dust jackets and printing corrected ones was excessive.

Tom deserved better. As an outraged friend of his wrote me, “Don’t writers matter?”

Apparently not.

Dave Petzal hunted Cape buffalo from 1981 to 2017, off and on, and avoided both death and disgrace in the long grass.
