Opening weekend for Rio Grande turkey, a bit of winter still holding tight to the Texas Panhandle.
One day free to hunt.
Tthe first afternoon’s scouting calls drew blanks. So we set up near a roost early the next morning,
and this time the toms answered. Until they heard real hens calling from
Late afternoon at the edge of a field, hoping the turkeys will come this way en route to the roost. Finally, about
half an hour before dark a tom answers our calls. And then, lit by the low Texas sun, there he is—iridescent,
fanned, dominant red and blue, a short 30 yards off. One shot, one bird.
